DIY Serving Tray

I had huge plans on making my own tray out of a wooden cutting board and cabinet pulls, but while at a local craft store I found an unfinished wooden tray and decided it was perfect for this project!

So keep in mind if you can’t find a perfect serving tray, you can always make one super easily – once the tray is made, the process would be the same.I was a bad blogger and didn’t take a totally unfinished picture of my tray, but I think you’ll still get the same idea!SUPPLIES NEEDED

Unfinished Wood Tray
Apple Barrel Paint – Laguna
Black and White Polka Dot Fabric
Mod Podge
Yellow Polka Dot Ribbon
Paint Brushes

The first step is to paint the tray – I chose Laguna by Apple Barrel Paints.
The fabric I chose for the bottom of the tray was a thick home decor fabric so I chose to not paint the bottom.

After a few coats, I hit the tray with a clear acrylic spray coating.

Next cut the fabric for the bottom of the tray. I just laid my tray on top of my black polka dot fabric (do you recognize that from the Minnie Mouse Party I styled?!) and cut around it.

Brush a thick layer of Mod Podge onto the bottom of the tray.

Lay your fabric on top and smooth it down, paying special attention to the corners.

You’ll need a super sharp Xacto knife (I put a new blade on mine) or box cutter for this next step.
Place the cutter into the crease of the tray and carefully cut the fabric. You do not need to wait for the Mod Podge to dry before doing this. The corners can be a bit tricky, so take your time.

Once you cut off the excess fabric, brush on another coat of Mod Podge right over the top of the fabric.

You can stop here if you want, but I decided I wanted to add a bit more decoration to my tray. I REALLY wanted to use a bright pink ribbon, but I didn’t have enough, so I went with my yellow polka dot ribbon to line the edges of the tray. I just cut the ribbon to fit each side and then laid it right over the last coat of Mod Podge. I added a layer of Mod Podge over the ribbon and then set the whole thing aside to dry.

That’s it, you’re all set to serve Mom something special this Mother’s Day!
It doesn’t have to be just breakfast in bed either!
Think lunch by the pool, or a snack with her favorite book for a little rest and relaxation.
This is something most Mom’s would 100% appreciate!

Want to add a little something-something to the tray?
Make my Irish Creme Fruit Dip and she’ll even more special that you addressed all the little details!
