I am starting to think about our new house and how I plan on decorating it. It is going to be a pretty neutral pallet of grays and whites, so I know I want to add lots of pops of color to each room. I’ve already been working on painting my dining room table a nice bright aqua with bright white chairs. And I already plan on adding a colorful gallery wall in the living room. I decided I also wanted to have a fun piece of art in the entry way, so I came up with this super simple DIY Wall Art that puts to use a free printable I created. This piece cost me $10 for the canvas and the frame, the rest of the items I had on hand).
Canvas (12 x 18 from Michael’s)
Painters Tape
Acrylic Paint
Ruler
Paint Brush/Foam Pouncer
Wood Frame (5×7 from Michael’s)
Foam dots or 3M Command Strips Velcro
INSTRUCTIONS:
Start by determining how wide you want your stripes to be. For my 12×18 canvas I decided on 9 2″ stripes. I measured 2″ from one side and laid down a strip of painter’s tape. I only had 1.5″ tape, so I measured 2″ from the far edge of the tape and laid a second strip overlapping the first to create a 2″ section of canvas that was covered by tape. Continue to measure each 2″ section adding strips of tape.
With a stencil brush or foam pouncer, paint your canvas. I did three coats, allowing the paint to dry in between coats.
After the last coat of paint was applied I removed the tape.
Set the canvas aside and paint your decorative frame. Set aside to dry.
Once the items are dry, add a picture or printable quote to the frame. I used foam dots, but you can also use adhesive velcro to make the frame easily removable, to adhere the frame to the center of the canvas.
For $10 I created this fun and bold welcome message for the entryway of my new house! What do you think? Will you give it a try?
I shared this project on my local morning news. Here is the segment:
