We’ve been in our new house for two years now and I still haven’t finished my craft room. I love having the dedicated space… but I don’t love that it doesn’t have a lot of natural light. I am lucky enough to have a craft room, and it does have two large windows. The only problem? Those windows are under our back deck, so not a ton of light comes in, and being a blogger, I need lots of light when photographing for tutorials. I do use the space often when I’m not creating tutorials though and I really wanted to work on finishing it up. I had one wall that was blank and I really wanted to add something fun and colorful, which brings me to today’s project: DIY Floral Word Art. This is not a tutorial because I sat down without anything mind and this is the result, but I wanted to share because I just love the end product and thought you would too.

DIY Painted Letters - Navy Blue with Floral

This project is nothing new… except for the twist I took when painting the letters for my wall. I picked up letters to spell M-A-K-E; two 12″ paper mache letters, 1 6″ paper mache letter and 1 12″ wood letter. I have a huge love of florals on navy blue right now. And I mean HUGE! I have several dresses for myself that are navy with florals, I bought one for my daughter, I have a blanket with it, and iPhone wallpapers… seriously, it just makes my heart so happy! There is no way I am alone in this love, right? So when it came time to start painting the letters I decided to take a risk and attempt a navy letter with florals. I was worried that it wouldn’t come out well, but I had NOTHING to worry about. This is super easy to do and hard to mess up!

I started by painting the flowers first. I chose my color scheme based off one of my floral dresses, which also inspired the flower shapes. If you don’t have a dress, just do a Google search and find an image you like and then try to create it! I went with simple shaped flowers and just added lots of color variation. Once the flowers dried, I carefully painted the rest of the letter navy blue. After a couple of coats I realized that I hadn’t painted on leaves! I went ahead and did that. It took a couple of coats to cover the blue, but I love the end result!

Once my gorgeous floral M was done, I decided to do the A in a gorgeous coral color. My original plan was to do the K and E in the floral too, but I thought it would be too much. So I ended up with an yellowish-orange K… and a blank E. I turned to Facebook to ask what color YOU thought the E should be, and an overwhelming number said GREEN! It was the color I was leaning towards anyway. But to spice it up, I created an ombre effect using the greens that I used on the leaves of the M.

Super easy, it took about 2 hours of painting total! I hung them using 3M Velcro Command Strips and they added the perfect amount of color and whimsy to my craft room. I promise I’ll share a photo of them hung, I just haven’t found the time or the right time of day to do that yet!

What do you think? Do you love them? Would you hang these in your home? Let me know if you have any questions!
