Looking for a memorable way to give graduation cash? My DIY periodic table graduation gift transformed simple money into a framed “Periodic Table of College Expenses” tailored to my son Mason. He just graduated high school and is heading to college this fall, majoring in Chemical Engineering. I turned a traditional high school graduation cash gift into a framed Periodic Table of College Expenses, complete with hidden pockets of money behind each custom “element.”
Designing Custom Elements
I created the 10″ x 10″ table design in Adobe Illustrator, arranging six color-coded categories: Life Skills, Food, Transportation, Emergency, Memories, and Fun. Each square had the Element and description: Sk for Sour Skittles (“Tangy crunch for cram sessions”), Gl for Game Loot (“Fuel your late night firefights”), Hm for Home Visits (“Gas money”), Ld for Laundry (“Socks won’t wash themselves”), and so on. After exporting the file as a high-resolution PDF, I printed it on heavy cardstock at my local UPS Store, trimmed the edges, and got to work on the hidden pockets.
Building the Hidden Money Pockets
Using a metal ruler and an X-Acto knife, I cut a clean slit at the top of each element box. On the back, I taped small rectangles of scrap cardstock on three sides so the slot lined up with each pocket opening. This created little pockets that kept the bills from sliding around. Then I folded various denominations of cash, slipped them through the slits, and pressed gently to be sure everything sat flat. A 10 x 10 frame with a bit of depth from Amazon was perfect. I put the glass behind the print so that once the money was taken out, he could put the glass back in place and keep the table as a fun memory.
Framing and Final Presentation
To complete the presentation, I tucked a handmade card alongside the frame. I typed in my first concept and thoughts and ChatGPT helped me polish the poem until it felt just right:
The Periodic Table of College Expenses
Essential elements for a future Chem E
This table’s packed with the stuff you’ll need—
For burgers, for gas, for laundry, indeed.
For snacks, for fun, for visits back home,
And tiny surprises when you’re out on your own.
Just a little boost as you start what’s next—
I’m proud of you, Mason!
Why a DIY Periodic Table Gift Wins Every Time
I wrapped the framed table, slid the card under the ribbon, and loved watching Mason’s eyes light up as he uncovered the cash tucked behind each element. The gift perfectly blends his passion for chemistry with practical support for the adventures ahead. Hard to beat that!
