My daughter has taken a liking to wearing hats lately. Unfortunately well on a field trip with her camp, she left her favorite hat behind. Since it is summer and I’m always looking for things to do with them, I told her we should make her a hat. She loved the idea, so we picked up a blank white cotton hat. She started brainstorming and we ended up with a Mermaid Hair, Don’t Care Hat! Post contains affiliate links for your convenience.

I created the design in Illustrator and saved it as an SVG file (I’m sharing it at the bottom of this post!). I uploaded that into Cricut Design Space so that I could cut the file with my Cricut Maker. Once it was uploaded, I welded the words together and then attached them and turned them to a salmon color. I attached the bubbles together and turned them to a teal.

I placed the salmon iron on vinyl, shiny side down onto the mat and loaded it into the machine. Next, I sent the cut file to the Cricut Design Space mat and mirrored the design before sending it to my machine. Once sent, I chose the material setting for everyday iron on and began cutting. Once the words were cut, I removed the vinyl from the mat and replaced it with teal. I loaded that into the machine and began cutting the bubbles.

Once the vinyl was cut, I carefully weeded out the excess vinyl.

I cut around as close as I could to each set of bubbles and placed them onto the back of the salmon wording so that I could iron everything onto the hat at the same time.

Ironing onto a hat can be tricky. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to use my Cricut EasyPress for this, so I grabbed my clothes iron. HOWEVER, Cricut announced some exciting news last week – they’ve released the Cricut EasyPress Mini, a press for unusual projects like hats, shoes and stuffed animals!

But since I don’t have one YET, I moved forward with my iron. Once it was heated, I placed the iron on vinyl onto the hat. I pushed the back of the hat into the front so that I had an extra layer between my hand and the hot iron. I carefully held the hat in my left hand as I used the iron to adhere the vinyl in place.

I did this slowly, piece by piece, right to left. Once the whole piece was adhered to the hat, I did a few spot presses on sections I didn’t think were stuck enough. Once finished, I pulled up the clear backing and the hat was done!

My daughter loves it and is excited to have a new Mermaid Hair, Don’t Care hat to wear for the rest of the summer!
