My little brother is getting married in 3 weeks in a backyard, DIY wedding ceremony. Him and his bride to be asked if I could make them a simple wedding cake topper that they could put on top of their wedding cake. The plan is for them to have an 8″ cake with vanilla frosting, while the guests will get cupcakes. Read on to find out how I made this DIY Naked Cake and topper!

After looking at different cake toppers they decided they wanted a “Mr & Mrs” gold sparkle topper, which should look really pretty with their purple color scheme. Using my Cricut Maker and the Cricut Design Space software, I created the topper. Have a Cricut and want to make this topper? Simply open my Cricut Design Space Wedding Cake Topper file. I used a thick gold sparkle cardstock to cut the topper. I hot glued a bamboo skewer to the back – right along where the two M’s are connected.

And can we talk about that gorgeous Naked Cake for a second?! Would you believe that started as a plain old grocery store cake? I asked the bakery if they had any plain white cakes. Unfortunately they did not, but the lady at the counter said that she would easily whip one up in about five minutes. I specified no borders, just plain traditional white frosting. If you’re bakery is unable to accommodate you, I think one of their frosted cakes in the display could work as long as you’re careful!

So how do you take the grocery store cake and turn it into this beautiful cake? Simple! Take off all the frosting.

I used a frosting spatula and started to remove the frosting from the sides. Simply line the edge up to the cake, and spin the cake while holding the spatula against it. Remove the excess frosting as you go. It took a couple of turns around the cake to get all of the frosting off.

Next I carefully scraped the frosting off the top.

Using flowers that I also purchased at the grocery store I cut a couple of blooms from the bouquet and stuck them onto the top of the cake. Place the topper on top and you’ve got a simple yet gorgeous naked wedding cake for under $15! Of course a bigger cake will be a bit more, but still super affordable and so, so easy!

Really this could work for any fancy get together – customize the topper with the birthday girls name, or the anniversary couples names, de-frost the grocery store cake, add a few flowers and you’re ready to impress all the guests with your skills!
