This Christmas, my daughter, Olivia, requested a blend of Boho and Cottage Core room makeover. She came to me with a interest board filled with inspiration – think dreamy, neutral tones, macrame, and plenty of greenery.
The first step was tackling the walls. Olivia chose a soft, calming shade of light green that perfectly set the stage for her desired aesthetic. The weekend before Christmas, we tackled painting the walls. Once we painted the room, she ended up rearranging it as well… which led to the last minute decision to buy her a new vanity to fit the space.
I enjoyed selecting every detail – from the jute rug to the perfect plants. As I ordered each piece I added it to a vision board so I could see everything come together.
As Olivia opened each gift, she got more and more excited to see it all together. We spent Christmas night and the next day setting up her new room. As everything came together, we found some blank spaces that we wanted to fill, so I pulled out my Cricut and some wood veneer sheets and made some DIY decor. I crafted a phases of the moon and a sun and moon wall hangings. I also whipped up a boho wood and yarn wall hanging and Olivia created a second one, adding a touch of handmade love to the space. And yes, I’ll link to the Cricut Design Space files below.

So let’s check out the room:
I made the macrame garland and paired it with a wood bead photo garland that she already had. The frames all came from Homegoods. I’ll link to all the Amazon purchases at the bottom of this post, including the shelves and plants.
A closer look at the boho style wood wall hangings I created with my Cricut.
We took apart her bouquet from my wedding and used the flowers to decorate her new mirror to fit the space better.
I love how Olivia attached her hair bows to some twine and hung them on the back of the door. Super cute and practical! Olivia and I made the wood and yarn hangings because that wall was too blank for our liking.
I love using clip boards for wall decor. It’s easy to change out the prints whenever you want. I chose birth flowers and floral constellations for May and September. May is the birth month for both our dog Owen and Olivia, and September is when our other dog, Luna, was born.
I also added the vines that Olivia already owned to the curtains and it was the perfect touch.
We keep joking about how the dogs match the aesthetic of the room perfectly!
This project was a reminder of the magic of creating something special for the ones you love. It was a labor of love, and I’m so thrilled with how it turned out.
Tips for Creating a Dream Teen Room:
- Involve your child. Let them choose their favorite colors, themes, and inspiration.
- Create a vision board. This helps visualize the overall look and feel.
- DIY touches. Add personal flair with handmade decorations. Plus, it saves you a little money if you use items from around the house.
- Don’t forget the details! From bedding to lighting, every element matters.
- And most importantly, have fun!
