By now you are probably aware that Cricut recently released a new cutting machine, the Cricut Maker (Post contains affiliate links). If you don’t know anything about the Maker, I compared the Maker with its predecessor, the Cricut Explore Air 2, so definitely check that out. One of the biggest upgrades to the new machine is the rotary blade. It opens up a world of sewing for those with this machine. I’ve been seeing a lot of people that are purchasing the Maker but have never sewn before, so today I’m sharing a beginner sewing project: a Scrap Fabric Kitty Cat! It’s adorable, simple and kids love it!
Don’t have the Maker? No worries, I’ll share a pdf version of the pattern as well… it just means you’ll have to do the cutting with your two hands and a pair of scissors!
Let’s get started!
Cricut Maker with Rotary Blade
12×12 Fabric Mat
Scrap Fabric – as many coordinating fabrics as you want. I used 5
1 piece of felt
Heat Transfer Vinyl for cat face
Scrap Fabric Kitty Cat SVG file
For those without the Cricut:

Use a Fabric Sharpie to draw on the cats eyes, nose, mouth and whiskers
Downloads are personal use only. Do not alter.
Download the Scrap Fabric Kitty Cat SVG file to your computer. Open a new project in Cricut Design Space. Upload the SVG file. Once uploaded, choose the image and click Insert Images.
When the file is uploaded, all images are set to black as the color. You will need to change the pieces to different colors so that they will be sent to different mats. If your body color is on a blue fabric, choose blue for the body color. If two of your arms will be pink and two will be purple, then select two and turn them pink and select the other two and turn them purple. Continue for all of your fabrics.
Once all of your colors have been assigned, click MAKE IT!
Follow the directions on the screen for cutting the fabrics. Make sure you use your Pink Fabric Mat, as it is specially made to handle the rotary blade.
Once the fabric is cut, it’s time to assemble.
Starting with two arm pieces, place right sides together. Starting on one side, sew all the way down and around the bend and back up the other side using a ¼” seam allowance. Do not sew across the top, that is left open for turning. Repeat for the other arm, legs and ears.
Flip each extremity right side out. Iron flat.
Starting with the back body piece, pin the tail onto the middle of the back, on the patterned side of the fabric. Sew into place.
Now it is time to create a cat sandwich. Place one of the body pieces right side up. Place the ears at the top of the head. Place the arms on both sides, making sure they are the same height from the bottom. Last, place the legs at the bottom.
Place the second body piece right side down and pin all pieces into place.
Starting about 1.5” from the bottom on one side, sew around the entire edge of the cat, using a 1/4” seam allowance. Stop at least an inch from your starting point so that you have a hole for turning.
Flip the cat right side out. Iron flat.
Now it is time to add the cat’s face. Place the heat transfer vinyl onto the front side of the cat. Place a pillow case or similar material over the top. Iron following the directions on the vinyl.
Stuff the cat nice and full and hand stitch the opening shut.
30 – 45 minutes and you’ve got an adorable little stuffy to give to your favorite littler person!

This is just about the cutest thing EVER, Kim! I’m going to be firing up my Cricut to make some stuffed pumpkins in the next few days and seeing how well your project turned out encourages me – I’ve been a bit nervous about the process. I can’t wait to see what else you’ll create with yours.
Oh fun!! Such a cute project.
Thank you Jennifer!
