As you know, I’m planning my daughters 13th birthday and she chose a Tea Party Luncheon.
I’m going for a fun vintage vibe, but these are tween/teen girls, so I want to add a bit of physical activity to help keep the shrieks to a minimum… although my idea may induce a few.

I purchased two super-80’s dresses for $5 each at Goodwill’s which really make me laugh.
The idea is that the girls will break into two groups. At their feet there will be a pile of clothes – dress, shoes, sweater, glasses and a cut little mini top hat. They need to get dressed, run to the end of the driveway and back where she gets undressed. The next person in line does the same. First group done wins. Fun, right?

I had a first thought about doing big ole floppy hats, but I couldn’t find any for a good price, so I went home, searched my craft stash and came up with mini foam top hats.
Once I made one up my daughter fell in LOVE.
She actually wants to wear it the whole tea party!

That’s the backstory, so here’s how to make it:

I grabbed my daughters Math Instruments kit and used her compass to create the top and arch that creates the sides of the hat. I also used a stencil to create the oval shape of the bottom.

But don’t worry, you won’t have to go to those extremes because I did it for you!
Download the template via Google Docs.

Cut out the template and trace it onto a piece of craft foam – mine was from the Dollar Store.

Cut out each piece.

Take the side piece and hot glue the ends together.
You may need to cut a small strip of foam to help seal the two ends together.

The top is tricky, but very carefully glue that to the top of the cone you just created.

Lastly, glue the part you’ve created to the bottom piece.

I chose to embellish mine with a ribbon flower, feathers and tulle – just have fun with it!

Now how to attach it to the hair?
You could glue it to a headband, but I chose alligator clips.

I cut a circle of felt to glue to the bottom of the hat.
I then glued two alligator clips to the felt, with the opening of the clips facing towards the front of the hat.
