My niece loves cat. Absolutely adores them. And since I was in the mood to sew, I decided to whip up matching outfits for my daughter and her. This DIY Kitty Outfit is super easy to create and looks adorable on both girls, who are 5 years apart. A beginner can tackle this skirt, and the shirt is totally no sew – doesn’t get much easier than that.

1″ elastic

For the skirt, I simply followed Made Everyday’s Simple Skirt Tutorial.

Once I whipped up the skirt, I created the cat pocket. I hand drew a cat head template. I traced the template onto the fat quarter and cut out 2 pieces.

Sew the 2 pieces together using a .25″ seam allowance, leaving a hole at the bottom for turning.

Clip the edges of the head near the tips of the ears and along any curves to help when turning right side out – this technique removes the bulk and allows a seam to lay smooth.

Turn right side out. Use a pencil or other sharp object to push ears out and into place.

Iron the cat head flat, tucking the edges under and in where the hole is.

Now is a great time to add the eyes, nose and mouth to your cat head. For the first skirt I did this step second and it was a lot more work, so definitely do it now! Use two buttons for eyes and a button for the nose. Using embroidery thread, add a mouth.

Lay the skirt flat and locate where you want the pocket to be positioned. Pin into place.

Starting at the bottom of the ear, use a .25″ seam allowance and sew around the cat head, over to the bottom of the other ear.

Almost done! The last step is to add whiskers. I used white embroidery thread, starting at the nose and working my why out. Make sure you don’t stitch through the skirt, just the inside of the pocket. I finished mine on the edge of the pockets where I did go through the skirt, which made tying the end knot much easier.

That’s it for the skirt!

To make the shirt: (If you need a tutorial with photos, you can check out how to use the Cricut Explore to cut iron on vinyl, weed it and apply, check out my Believe in your dreams Shirt)

Open my Meow Shirt Cricut Design Space File. Side note: I made this design right on my iPhone using the Cricut Design Space app. How cool is that?! Never even had to pull out my computer. Gotta love crafting on the go!

Place iron-on vinyl onto a mat, clear coating face down. Feed into the machine, making sure the dial is set to Iron-on.

Send the Design Space file to the machine, making sure to select Mirror Image.

Once the vinyl is cut, weed it. Place it onto the shirt and iron on following the directions on the package.
